Their Wonderlands was a large-scale exhibition of work by international artists exploring myth and folklore in modern European culture curated by multidisciplinary collective They Are Here at the Midlands Art Centre, Birmingham. The exhibition was an immersive experience in which the audience were invited in small numbers to explore a darkened gallery with torches. A maze structure formed the path through this exhibition and the display mechanism for the work shown, concealing and revealing different works as the audience negotiated the complex space.
The maze structure They Are Here wanted to develop was based on a design concept by Yona Friedman which enabled the quick construction of temporary architecture with the minimal use of tools. For Their Wonderlands Queen & Crawford worked to detail Friedman’s drawings, providing full architectural designs for the wall system. Their role was therefore to ensure that this maze structure was both structurally and conceptually sound, enabling They Are Here a smooth fabrication and install period.
