This series of three sculptures by Karin Kihlberg & Reuben Henry took the form of an architect’s maquette. The works were formed of two interlocking parts: the upper part resembling the upturned ziggurat of John Madin’s Birmingham Central Library, the lower structure resembling the Apollo 1 launch pad which remains as a monument to the failed launch. Each of these two elements contained one meteorite, visible in the surface of the concrete.
Queen & Crawford fabricated these sculptures using the same concrete mix utilised by John Madin for his iconic Brutalist building, the Birmingham Central Library, with materials sourced from the quarries specified by Madin. The works are formed of steel reinforced cast concrete with an aggregate of meteorite.
